Plants and Purification

July 15, 2020

As we are all finding ourselves at home, we are all looking for ways to create a harmonious space. Plants and flowers are a great way not only to add life but also to purify your space.

All common houseplants have purifying qualities, but some are better than others at filtering out nasty airborne substances. Here are some of the top low-maintenance air-purifying plants and tips for taking care of each of them.

Bromeliads

Bromeliads are amazing and considered the best houseplant available to purify a space quickly and efficiently. Their bright, bold blooms make for lovely home décor as well. They prefer bright, filtered light with maintained air flow. Make sure the soil stays moist, but not soggy. For bromeliads, drier soil is better than wet. If it becomes too wet, it can rot and die quickly, so make sure the pot or container used has adequate drainage holes at the bottom.

Spider Plants

Spider plants are another great option. They are soft, flowy, and can be grown quickly from water to soil in just a few weeks. They prefer bright, filtered light and are best planted in a hanging container as they will eventually grow long spidery tendrils that hang down the sides. A pot with good drainage would work as well. Just like bromeliads, spider plants prefer dryness to wetness.

Peace Lilies

Peace lilies are both beautiful and effective air purifiers. Their white blooms fit into nearly every design scheme, making it an excellent choice for bedrooms, living rooms, dens, and more. They prefer bright light, but can grow just about anywhere. When peace lilies start to wilt, it means they need water — that’s about all you need to know to keep them hydrated. Fertilize these plants every six to eight weeks and be sure to maintain proper drainage to prevent oversaturation.

Dracaenas

Dracaenas prefer less water than most indoor plant, making these a great choice for low-maintenance homes and out-of-the-way spots. Their height and hardy constitution make this plant a prime choice for those new to plant care. You’ll need to keep the soil lightly misted rather than pouring the water into the soil directly. Always allow the topsoil to dry out before misting again and, as always, make sure the container has proper drainage.

Sansevierias and Aloe Vera

Sansevierias (also known as Mother-in-Law’s Tongue or Snake Plants) and Aloe Vera both fall under the succulent family. These varieties, in particular, would rather be too dry than too wet, so keep an eye on proper drainage. These plants are quite hardy and can handle direct sun. Avoid pouring water directly onto the florets or leaves, as that can cause the plant to rot. Instead, water around the base of the plant directly into the soil so it can effectively reach the plant’s roots.

Chrysanthemums

We often associate the vibrant colors of mum plants with the fall season, but mums can actually be great year-round houseplants that will purify the air while adding a pop of color to any space. Mums prefer filtered light and well-drained soils — no overwatering. The leaves of the mum plant will start to wilt when they need water, so pay attention to the leaves’ integrity. You do not need to fertilize indoor mum plants.

If you are looking for a few indoor plants, feel free to give us a ring or stop by our showroom!

Fatemeh and Farhad’s Birthday Evening

May 26, 2020

This stunning husband and wife duo were both celebrating milestone birthdays, and they wanted to celebrate in style! We loved designing this gold and white evening with touches of black. To spruce up the space, we wanted to give guests multiple areas in the ballroom to grab a cocktail. We utilized a stunning half-moon bar featuring the couple’s initials and a geometric gold bar with a candle wall that created a beautiful focal point. Fatemeh and Farhad enjoyed the evening mingling with guests and dancing the night away.

Flourishing Art in the News: May Press Roundup

May 11, 2020

In the month of May, we focused on education for couples as they navigate the daunting task of rescheduling their wedding dates and planning during COVID-19. We also contributed to a few industry articles to help some of our creative friends find inspiration during this time, as well as how you can push your business forward after a setback.

In our first mention, we were thrilled to have our styled shoot at Sextant Winery in Trends Magazine. Reliving this stunning shoot has us ready to get back to Sextant to create some more magic! We can’t get enough of that adorable cottage, and the all-white floral combination is what spring dreams are made of!

Next up, we tackled the topic of how to handle virtual planning meetings with your floral designer on Brides. Like many others, we have had some of our consultation appointments via phone or video, but this is a whole new world of having all of our clients online.

During this time, we have all found ourselves looking for a little inspiration and something happy to lift our spirits. We were thrilled to be included in an article on Catersouce among other event industry professionals that are spreading the love. We were included with our delivery of over 150+ arrangements to area hospitals, nursing homes, and Alzheimer care centers and hospices. Others were included for online dance parties, to kids boxes for takeout, and an incredible interview with photographer Lara Woolfson who has recovered from Coronavirus.

As we entered April, Oleta shared her very personal story of how she rebuilt Flourishing Art after her diagnosis and recovery of breast cancer on Sage Wedding Pros. As most business owners are facing uncertain times, we hope that this article can help them as well.

Flourishing Art in the News: April Press Roundup

April 28, 2020

As you can imagine, the last month has been one of change for a lot of our couples, as well as the industry. Our press also reflects that- we were eager to jump in and lend insight where we could, while also talking about what we love best- flowers!

First up, we have seen our fair share of crisis in California from mudslides to wildfires, and we wanted to share our expertise on how to effectively communicate with clients during a difficult time to help our fellow vendors during the COVID-19 crisis. You can read the full article on WIPA’s blog.

As we know, couples have had to postpone their big days. Why not consider surprising your guests with a new secret elopement or wedding with our tips over on Catalyst Wedding Co.

We also had a bit of fun with flowers over at Martha Stewart Living.

First, we broke down the best ways to keep your cut flowers at home last longer just in time for Spring. Our suggestions just may surprise you!

We also shared insight on the number of available hydrangea varieties–  from endless summer and mountain to bigleaf. Enjoy the visual guide that we helped curate!

2020 International Wedding Trend Report

February 5, 2020

We couldn’t be more thrilled to announce that we’ve been featured in this year’s International Wedding Trend Report! Each year, The Wedding Academy compiles a beautifully designed report of global trends from industry experts all around the world. Flourishing Art has been named as a contributor in the floral category, and we wanted to share some of our included picks below.

Go Bold or Go Home

Couples are returning to the ‘wow’ factor this year by including a wealth of vibrant shades into their wedding blooms. We’re seeing a lot of bright green, oranges, bold reds, rich blues and purples.

As of late, we’ve been working with a lot of wine and burgundy hues, but we’re excited to see classic red making a comeback. The combination of these colors together makes for a marbled, exquisite pairing that piles on the drama.

Elegant Textures

Following the dramatic route, we’ll expect to see more utilization of modern metals in couples’ floral designs, whether they be glittering accents or muted matte elements. The bigger, the better here – there’s no longer too much texture to be had! Dried and preserved florals incorporated with fresh blossoms is also the new trending juxtaposition that’s all the rage for 2020.

Cascading Bouquets

Long, daring bridal bouquets are here! Cascades and cressets are emerging, although the free-form style has been in for quite a few years. With this, we’ll see more draping greenery and accent flowers that will elevate what will be showcased during the ceremony.

WIPA

Taking your business to an international level is no small decision. If you’re not sure that it’s the right time, take a look at our article on WIPA to help you make a more informed decision!

SheFinds

We’re on SheFinds with one of the most common regrets we find our clients make when planning their wedding. Not having their planner present when booking the location(s). This is one of the most important decisions you’ll make in the planning process and having someone who knows the right questions to ask and necessary logistics will make a big difference.
